On the other hand, some of it I didn&#8217;t get wind of until after my <strong>usual Wednesday morning post<\/strong> time, so hopefully all&#8217;s good. A couple people\u00a0<strong>mentioned they were wondering what had happened<\/strong> when there wasn&#8217;t anything new on the site the other day; I&#8217;m touched and pleased that people actually look for this little blog on a regular basis. Joe&#8217;s a mixed-game player, who holds his own in hold&#8217;em. I&#8217;ve played with him a fair amount over the years, and as a computer programmer myself (though less accomplished both there and on the poker field) I have to admire his skill, not to mention the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsop.com\/tournaments\/update\/1Y4H\/seven-handed-final-table\/\" target=\"_blank\">he\u00a0<em>and<\/em> his daughter\u00a0<strong>Liz Tedder<\/strong><\/a> can crush tournaments. Did my best this summer to give them both a little notice in the live reporting.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Is There Still Live Poker In Portland?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last week, I asked this question when <strong>I mentioned not having had the opportunity to play much off-line poker<\/strong> for the past couple of months. My first game after the\u00a0<strong>Fall Coast Classic Main Event<\/strong> lasted four hands. Last week, I got\u00a0<strong>out to Portland Meadows<\/strong> for the first time since August (more on that below) and got through a whole level! Parking has been less of a problem for Final Table than it was for Encore, but their customers do tend to soak up lot space in front of other businesses, like\u00a0<strong>Pizza Baron<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>O&#8217;Reilly&#8217;s Auto Parts<\/strong>, as well as the rest of the strip mall. I meant to ask how that affects daytime customers.<\/p>\n<p>First hand I played, <span class=\"inline-cards\"><span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"ace of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">A<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"queen of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">Q<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span><\/span>, I raised over a couple of limpers and got four callers, flopping <span class=\"inline-cards\"><span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"queen of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">Q<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"queen of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">Q<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"jack of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">J<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span><\/span>, c-bet, got raised by one caller, went all in and he called with <span class=\"inline-cards\"><span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"ace of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">A<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"jack of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">J<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span><\/span>. <strong><span class=\"inline-cards\"><span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"queen of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">Q<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span><\/span> on the turn for quads<\/strong> and a good start to the night. Hit a set of tens shortly after that, got up to three times the starting stack in less than half an hour. Twenty minutes later, after losing a chunk with a pair of tens, then a flopped set of nines where I somehow let <span class=\"inline-cards\"><span class=\"inline-card inline-card-c\" title=\"five of clubs\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">5<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">\u2663<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-c\" title=\"two of clubs\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">2<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">\u2663<\/span><\/span><\/span> get to the river to catch a flush, I was back just above start.<\/p>\n<p>For several hours, I was playing just upstream from\u00a0<strong>Lisa Meredith, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/06\/15\/kindergarten-teacher-lands-500000-playing-poker.html\" target=\"_blank\">3rd-place finisher in this summer&#8217;s WSOP Millionaire Maker<\/a>.<\/strong> She was unaware of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mutantpoker.com\/?page_id=651\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Pacific Northwest Poker Calendar (#PNWPokerCal)<\/strong><\/a>, but when she said she was looking for value in large poker tournaments, you know I spent some time plugging the site. <strong>Vicarious Living Through the Success of PNW Poker Players\u00e2\u201e\u00a2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Got up to 90+K at one point\u2014about 150% of the average stack at the time\u2014but ran <span class=\"inline-cards\"><span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"ace of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">A<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"king of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">K<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span><\/span> into <span class=\"inline-cards\"><span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"six of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">6<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"six of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">6<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span><\/span> on a flop of <span class=\"inline-cards\"><span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"ace of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">A<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"six of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">6<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"inline-card inline-card-x\" title=\"five of unspecified\"><span class=\"inline-card-rank\">5<\/span><span class=\"inline-card-suit\">x<\/span><\/span><\/span> and lost half my stack, never to recover. He said things are moving along well there, with weekday noon games more than doubling guarantees. The evening game I played had a $1K guarantee and $1,780 in the prize pool.<\/p>\n<p>Brian mentioned that Meadows hasn&#8217;t got any big events in the immediate plans (but there is a <strong>$20K at noon on Sunday, 23 October<\/strong>) but they have been settling into their operation. The<strong> poker room\u00a0has taken over the food and drink operations<\/strong> from Portland Meadows proper, and Brian said\u00a0they&#8217;re <strong>planning to bring in a<\/strong> <strong>chef<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were three tables running in the live section on a\u00a0Thursday night. Things seemed to be humming along much the same as they were in the first part of the year, but then I probably spent more time talking to Brian than I did actually playing poker that night.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Just a Reminder<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still looking for that angel investor to send me to the last\u00a0<strong>EPT Prague<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Devil&#8217;s Bargain:\u00a0Wildhorse Fall Poker Round-Up High Roller and Satellite<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When most people plan on their trip to Pendleton for the <strong>Fall Poker Round-Up at Wildhorse Resort and Casino<\/strong>\u2014the largest series in the Pacific Northwest for many years running\u2014they plan for the <strong>$545\u00a0Main Event<\/strong> on the closing weekend, with maybe an opening shot at the $335 tournament the day before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/minhthy.ledao?fref=ts\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net\/v\/t1.0-9\/14670602_1140347576034895_5662877507455934692_n.jpg?oh=45322bc4fffdfa059f6e5edf3a827600&amp;oe=589ADE58\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a>Last year&#8217;s Main got<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/pokerdb.thehendonmob.com\/event.php?a=r&amp;n=355786\" target=\"_blank\"> 379 entries, with a prize pool of $190K<\/a><\/strong> and made a nice bundle of $42K for <strong>Minh Leadao<\/strong>, who&#8217;s spent the year since taunting his Facebook followers from exotic locales in SE Asia and Australia. But like with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mutantpoker.com\/?p=636\" target=\"_blank\">most other large-field tournaments<\/a>, if you didn&#8217;t make the final table, you probably didn&#8217;t even even triple your money. Thirty-six places paid, and 18th got $1,351for a profit of only about 150%.<\/p>\n<p>The High Roller, with a $1,400 buyin and only 43 entries, only paid $18,585 up top, but the smallest payout in 6th place (the same Joe Brandenburg from up above) got $4,575, 200% ROI. This is just a feature of the top-heavy graduated payout structures in tournaments. (If this had been run as a Survivor-style tournament with payouts equal to ten times the player prize pool contribution of $1,400, there would have been four $14,000 payouts\u2014more than 2nd place paid, and one payout of $1,190. Just saying.)<\/p>\n<p>The cost of the High Roller has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mutantpoker.com\/?m=201312\" target=\"_blank\">dropping since the first one<\/a>\u00a0three years ago. They started at $2,000, went down to $1,500, and this year they&#8217;re at $1,100, presumably to capture a larger number of players.<\/p>\n<p>Even better, Wednesday night during the series (9 November), there&#8217;s a $225 Super Satellite for the High Roller, so you can potentially get a seat in the High Roller with 1 in 5 players in the satellite getting a ticket. Head out Wednesday with the money you could have spent on the Main, play the High Roller satellite, and if you don&#8217;t get a seat, play the $225 noon event running concurrently with the High Roller instead. The Main Event is a $240 buyin $200K guarantee with eight starting flights beginning the day before Halloween.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beachpokerclub.com\/img\/weeklyschedule.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Beach Poker Club<\/strong> in Eugene has its last two events for its\u00a0<strong>Grand Opening<\/strong><\/a> tomorrow, with a $49 NLHE Battle of the Sexes Freezeout at noon and an $89 buyin, $25 addon Turbo event at 5pm.<\/li>\n<li>The next\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.venetian.com\/content\/dam\/lasvegas\/venetian\/master\/main\/home\/casino\/DSE_IV_2016-Schedule.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Venetian Deepstack Extravaganza\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>starts Monday and runs through Thanksgiving. It opens with a $150K guarantee $250 buyin and has a total of 56 events.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsop.com\/tourney\/tourneydetails.asp?groupID=1253\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>World Series of Poker Circuit\u00a0<\/strong>holes up at\u00a0<strong>Harvey&#8217;s Lake Tahoe<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on Thursday, 27 October. It&#8217;s one of the smaller-turnout venues for the WSOPC.<\/li>\n<li>By contrast,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hptpoker.com\/eventinfo.php?yid=2016&amp;eid=37\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>St. Louis<\/strong>\u00a0is a big destination for the\u00a0<\/a><strong>HPT,\u00a0<\/strong>and its first event is the same day, a $100K guarantee with a $350 buyin.<\/li>\n<li>There was a late announcement of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B5hmWJY3rs91ZkRvSVpkR2dzcmYzdVBnUjB3ZkYzRGNnak9J\/view\" target=\"_blank\">Rio Final Table Festival<\/a><\/strong> at the home of the WSOP over Halloween weekend. Friday has $500 and $300 NLHE events, with a $1,100 satellite into the 2-day $10,000 main event on Monday (Halloween). Several other satellites to both the Main and smaller events that are running through the weekend.<\/li>\n<li>30 October\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/muckleshootcasino.com\/core\/files\/muckleshootcasino\/uploads\/files\/FLYER-1016-POKER-CALENDAR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Muckleshoot Casino<\/strong> is the\u00a0<strong>Fifth Sunday\u00a0<\/strong>special<\/a>, a $330 buyin with $3K added to the prize pool. Game starts at noon.<\/li>\n<li>An hour earlier on 30 October (11am) is also the\u00a0<strong>Tulalip Casino\u00a0<\/strong><strong>LSOM tournament<\/strong>. It&#8217;s $345 with the dealer toke, and has $5K added to the prize pool.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Mid-States Poker Tour\u00a0<\/strong>wanders west to\u00a0<strong>Golden Gates Poker Parlour<\/strong> in Blackhawk, Colorado. Satellites start Halloween, but a<strong>\u00a0$360 buyin<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>$100K guarantee<\/strong>\u00a0starts Thursday, 3 November, with the\u00a0<strong>$1,100 buyin $200K guarantee Main Event <\/strong>(though I hate seeing asterisks after that number when I can&#8217;t find what it&#8217;s for) kicking off 10 November.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wildhorseresort.com\/sites\/default\/files\/2016%20Fall%20Poker%20Events%20-%20all%20-%20print%20-%202_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Wildhorse Fall Poker Round-Up<\/strong><\/a> also begins 3 November. The LAPC Main Event has\u00a0<strong>$100K guaranteed for first place<\/strong> with a <strong>$1,650 buyin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hptpoker.com\/eventinfo.php?yid=2016&amp;eid=39\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>HPT<\/strong> moves across Missouri to\u00a0<strong>Kansas City<\/strong><\/a> on 10 November art the\u00a0<strong>Ameristar Casino<\/strong>.
